The Clipper Ship "Staffordshire" was built in 1851 by Donald McKay
of East Boston, and was owned by Enoch Train & Company.
"Staffordshire", along with the "Flying Cloud" and "Flying Fish", made
many records in the California trade.

Exquisitely carved full-length female figure, draped in cloth gown, with gilt laurel wreath and cap. One hand is extended to the sea, the other is gracefully poised at one side. Set on pedestal. Height, 46 inches

One of the earliest American figureheads extant, and said to have been the original figurehead for one of the pioneer New York to Liverpool packets, of the Black Ball Line, ship "Columbia".

SHIP'S FIGUREHEAD, "HARLEQUIN"

Three-quarter length female figure, dressed in masked costume of crimson cross striping on blue ground, one arm extended over head. Set on scroll at base. Carved of live oak.

Height, 72 inches

The figurehead is from H.M.Brig "Harlequin", active in the War of 1812, and mentioned in American naval history as partaking in several engagements. The Brig foundered in the Mediterranean in 1830. An unusual custom of the Commander of the vessel was to have the crew dress in masquerade costumes for shore leave, so that they could be easily located in rounding up the stragglers.
