37 And the two difciples heard him fpeak, and they followed Jefus.

38 Then Jefus turned, and faw them following, and faith unto them, What seek ye? They faid unto him, Rabbi, (which is to fay, being interpreted,Mafter) where dwelleft thou?

39 He faith unto them, Come and fee. They came and faw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peters brother.

41 He first findeth his own. brother Simon, and faith unto him, We have found the Meffias, which is, being interpreted, the Chrift..

THE two Difciples that were with him, having heard this repeated Testimony of John concerning Jefus, immediately followed after Jefus, who turning back, ask'd 'em the reafon why they follow'd him. They replied, Mafter (a term by which the Jews are wont to falute men skill'd in their Law) we were defirous to inform our felves of the place of your Habitation. Jefus told 'em they might fatisfy themfelves if they would go along with him. Accordingly they accompanied him, the Sun being about two hours high, and continued with him till the Evening. One of 'em was Andrew the Brother of Simon, who was afterwards call'd Peter.

He, having met his Brother who had heard nothing as yet concerning Jesus, told him he had found the Meffiah, and acquainted him with what we have before related.

42 And he brought him to Jefus. And when Jefus beheld him, he faid, Thou art Simon the fon of Jona: thou fhalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, a stone.

43 The day following, Jefus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and faith unto him, Follow me..

44 Now Philip was of Bethfaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and faith unto him, We have found him of whom Mofes in the law, and the prophets did write, Jefus of Nazareth, the fon of Jofeph.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip faith unto him, Come and fee.

47 Jefus faw Nathanael coming to him, and faith of him, Behold an Ifraelite indeed, in whom is no guile..

Afterwards he brought him to Jefus, who looking on him: Thou art, faid he, call'd Simon the Son of Jona, but hereafter thou halt be call'd Cephas, that is, Peter, or a Stone. By which change of name he fignified. to him. the change that fhould fhortly be made in his prefent state of Life.

The day following Jefus determin'd to go into Galilee, and meeting with Philip, a fellow Citizen of Andrew and Peter, he commanded him to follow him, and become his Difciple. Philip having promis'd Obedience, not long after met with Nathanael, and told him he had feen the wifh'd for Meffiah, concerning whom there was fo much recorded by Mofes and the other Prophets; namely, Jefus of. Nazareth the Son of Jofeph, as he was call'd by thofe who were ignorant of his Divine Generation. But fays Nathanael, Can any thing extraordinary proceed from Nazareth? Philip bid Nathanael go along with him to Jefus, that he might be able to judg for himself.

Nathanael inftantly complied with Philip, and at his approach to Jefus receiv'd this commendation from him, that he was a true Ifraelite, that is, one that worship'd God

48 Nathanael faith unto him, whence knowest thou me? Jefus anfwered and faid unto him, Before that Philip called thee when thou waft under the fig-tree, I saw thee.

49 Nathanael answered and faith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the king of Ifrael.

so Jefus anfwered and faid unto him, Because I said unto thee, I faw thee under the figtree, believeft thou? thou fhalt fee greater things than these.

51 And he faith unto him, Verily, verily I fay unto you, Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God afcending and defcending upon the Son of man.

God in Sincerity and Truth. Nathanael then ask'd him, why, being a Stranger to him, he had fuch a good opinion of him. Jefus told him he faw him under the Figtree before he was call'd by Philip, by which he might perceive that Jefus was a Prophet, becaufe he told him what it was impoffible for any other to know. Hereupon he cried out that Philip was not mistaken when he ftil'd him, the Son of God, or that King of Ifrael who had been fo much expected by all the pious Inhabitants of Judea. But fays Jefus to him, Believeft thou in me because I faid I faw thee under the Fig-tree? Thou shalt fee much greater and more wonderful things than this: The heavenly Angels, God's own Minifters, fhall defcend from Heaven, and return thither, imploy'd as Meffengers between God and me, tho I appear to thee as a mere man, and differ not from others in my outward Form.

But Jefus replied, and told her, She had no need to put him in mind of whatever was fitting for him to perform; befides, that the time was not yet come in which he was to work Miracles in publick, but notwithstanding that he was ready to comply with her Requeft in this particular. Mary therefore call'd the Servants, and ordered 'em to go to Jefus, and do whatever he should bid 'em. Now there was in the houfe where this Marriage was celebrated, fix Water-pots of Stone which were wont to be fill'd with Water, upon the account of the many washings among the Jews; each of which Pots contain'd two or three Cori, one whereof held above feven hundred and fixty Roman Pounds of Water, i.e. about an English Firkin.
