UR object in getting up this Periodical, is to furnish a course of Cheap, and Useful reading, of a healthful Literary and Moral character, and of such variety as to be adapted to the capacities of reading members of all families. The Sarticles published, will generally be short, thereby enabling us to comprehend the greater variety. We shall devote a brief portion of each number to Valuable Statistics, Useful Recipes, Medicine, Anecdotes, &c. Among the leading articles will be a history of the Rise and Progress of Shakerism in the West.-Also, a history of the Great Religious Revival or Awakening which took place in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, some fifty years ago; in which will be given a description of the Jerking, Falling, Rolling, Barking, and Dancing exercises. This was one of the most remarkable and astonishing religious excitements, of which we have any account, since the day of Pentecost. We shall also give the reader a series of Biographical Sketeltes of some of the most distinguished men of the world. Among which, will also be found the lives of some of the most Amusing and Eccentric geniuses, of all those who have lived on the historic page, to the present time. We shall also give as much of a Ilistory of Oregon, and other parts of the Western World, as can be gathered from the accounts of Travelers. Useful articles on Education, School Teaching, &c., will occupy a prominent place. We shall also present a series of articles on English Philology, embracing criticisms on English Composition, for the benefit of learners, in speaking and writing the English language correctly. Numerous Cuts will be inserted, illustrative of subjects presented. In short, we shall spare neither pains nor money, to make our book Useful, Interesting, and Amusing, and suited to the more elevated literary taste, and wants of the reading community.
