The first eighty leaves have a tiny hole through, and the last page is pasted to the fly-leaf, otherwise a particularly FINE, LARGE AND CLEAN COPY (15) ×111 ins.), a few marginal notes by a 16th century scribe. Folio, stamped calf, embossed, the sides contemporary, but not the bosses, well rebacked. Basel, circa 1469. £140

Printed at the first city in Switzerland into which printing was introduced, by the earliest printer, Berthold Rodt, or Ruppel of Hanau. There are a number of books printed in the same type, but the first with Berthold Rodt's imprint and dated was printed, so far as is known, in 1473. The above copy of the Lyra is of EXTREME RARITY. There is a copy in the British Museum, but no copy in Bodley, neither is there one mentioned in the "Census of American Incunabula."

At the commencement of the book is a vellum document, dated 1786, folded (19ins. ×13ins.). It bears the signature of Marie Antoinette and also those of several important officials.
