hearts, that the King of glory may come in: So in Rev. iii. 29. Behold Iftand at the door and knock, if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in and fup with him, and he with me. Oh! this is Chrift's fpiritual kingdom, and here he rules in the hearts of his people. Here he rules over their confciences, wills, affections, judgments and understanding, and no body hath any thing to do here but Chrift; it is Chrift that rules over the confciences and judgments of men, and therefore he is called the king of faints. It is true, other kings may rule over the estates of men, but as for the foul, that only belongs to Chrift: And therefore, believers are faid to be all glorious within. The kings daughter, which is the church, in Pfal. xlv. the king of glory rules and dwells there; you know God dwells in the higheft heavens, and in the humble hearts: Chrift is not only king of nations, but king of faints; the one he rules over, the other he rules in.

Thirdly, Jefus Chrift is his father's King too; and fo his father calls him; God calls Chrift his King, Pfal. xxvi. I will fet my king upon my holy hill of Sion: Well may he be our king, when he is God's king. But you may fay, how is Chrift his father's king, bes cause he rules over him, he rules for his father. There is a two-fold kingdom of God committed to Jefus Chrift; pray mark firs. 2. A fpiritual kingdom, by which he rules in

the hearts of his people, and fo he is king of faints. 2. A providential kingdom, by which he rules the affairs of the world, and fo he is king of nations. Now beloved, the scripture fays, that the father hath put all things into Chrift's hands, John, iii. laft verfe. And the Apoftle tells us, God hath put all things under his feet. The father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment to the fon, and, he hath appointed him over his own houfe; now as Christ hath all, fo he doth all, and rules all for his father; and therefore the father calls him his fervant, Ifa. xli. 2. Behold my fervant, and in the other text, my king, because he ruled for his father, and doth his father's will; fo that, beloved in these three refpects, Chrift is a king. Now I fhall lay down fomething wherein the Lord Jefus Chrift doth infinitely excel all the kings

of the earth.

1. Chrift Jefus is a King, that in a spiritual fenfe makes all his fubjects kings. He hath a crown of glory for every fubject. Oh, what a glorious King is this! Now that Chrift makes all his fubje&ts kings, Rev. v. 10. fays the church there, who hath made us to our Gods kings and priests. Oh! firs, it is better to be a member of Chrift, than the head of a nation. Oh! how infinitely happy are all Chrift's fubjects? They are kings, heirs, favourites, fons, and true believers; the believer is the only happy man, Alas! where

is there fuch a king to be found that makes all his subjects kings? There are many kings, that undo their fubjects, but Chrift makes his fubjects; many kings make their fubjects beggars, but Chrift makes his fubjects kings: Many kings put their fubjects to death, but Chrift died that his fubjects might live; they give their fubjects titles, but Chrift gives allhis fubjects grace and glory; firs, in a word, this is the greateft nobility, to be the fervant to the Great God; he is nobly descended, who is born from above. Oh! how many Lords hath that man, who hath not Christ for his Lord! Every fin is his Lord, and every luft Lords it over him. Now, where Jefus Christ comes to be king, he makes them kings to his father, and kings over their lufts. Now, beloved, here is the bleffednefs, and happiness of our king, he makes us all kings, and gives us all crowns of glory.

2. Jefus Chrift is a moft juft and righteous King, he reigns in righteoufnefs, he brings peace by righteoufnefs, he make us righteous, and therefore he is called, the Lord our righteoufnefs, in Jer. xxiii. 6. Now beloved other kings often deals unjustly, they bear the fword to execute wrath upon well doers; and ftrengthen the hands of evil doers; juftify the wicked, condemn the godly, break oaths, and falfily covenants; and many times they opprefs their fubjects, and wrong their people, therefore the fcriptures fay,

Prov. xxvi. When the righteous is in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn. But now beloved, Jefus Chrift, as he is a righteous king, fo he rules in righteoufnefs, and thou fhalt have nothing but righteous dealing from him Mind this text of fcripture, which infinitely fpeaks our Chrifl's righteous dealing with poor fouls, in Rev. xv. 13. Fult and true are thy ways. Mark, who are juft and true here? Why, it is the king of faints: Just and true are thy ways, thou king of faints: Juftice and truth well becometh the king of faints. In Prov. iii. 8. Her ways be ways of pleafantnefs, and all her paths are peace, fpeaking of wifdom, which is meant of Chrifl, Oh what a golden king is here! he is just and true, all his ways are pleasantness, and all his paths are peace, Oh firs, this is the excellency of Chrift, he oppreffeth no body, and therefore he is called juft and true; he infi nitely excels all the kings of the earth in righteoufnefs; he is a righteous king, and deals for nothing but righteoufnefs.

3. Chrift is a King that liveth for ever, and reigns for ever, their kings are but of yesterday, they be dead and gone. What is become of all thofe great and mighty kings we read of? Why? they are gone like a tale, like a dream. But it is not fo with the King of faints, the Lord is king for ever, he reigns for ever; and therefore the Apoftle calls him,

him, A king immortal, eternal, as you may fee 1 Tim. i. 17. Chrift is there called a king immortal, because he lives for ever. So in Heb. vii. fpeaking of Chrift, who ever lives, fays he, to make interceffion for us. Now, beloved, here is the glory of the Lord Jefus Chrift, he lives for ever; other Kings are dead, and their fubjects may do what they will, but Jefus Chrift lives for ever.

4. Jefus Chrift is a King that hath a perfect knowledge of all his fubjects. Oh Sirs! Kings, Princes.and States, do not know all their fubjects, nay, very few; alas! not one quarter of them, they are not acquainted with the wrongs, wants and miferies that their poor fubjects lie under; we are unknown most of us to our prince. But now here is the excellency of Chrift, he hath a perfect knowledge of all his fubjects, he knows them all by name; all their thoughts, wants, ways and conditions. Now I fay, this is a great happiness, that we have a King that knows us fo well. O! poor fouls, Chrift knows you all, all your wants, conditions and neceffities whatfoever. The Lord Jefus knows all thy fufferings, and therefore fays Paul, in Phil. iv. My God fhall Supply all your wants. O! it is a fweet fcripture, My God fhall fupply all your wants. So fay I to you, firs, your King will fupply all your ftraits and fears; yea, he will fupply all your needs. O here is the excellency of this King,
