PREACHED AT

THE LOCK CHAPEL, APRIL 30th, 1786.

ON OCCASION OF THE

DEATH OF THE REV. DR. CONYERS,

OF DEPTFORD.

N. B. The following Sermon was preached, merely as a practical improvement of the affecting providential dispensation which gave occasion for it: but, an application from a most respectable quarter, induced the Author to publish it, of which he had previously no intention. And as the subject is most important, and the instructions, he trusts, scriptural, he would leave it in the hands of God, hoping and praying that some good may be done by it.

EUKE xii. 40.

therefore ready also: for the Son of Man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

THE frequency with which this warning, and others to the same effect, are inculcated in the sacred scriptures, alone evinces their importance. Three Evangelists record the prophecy of our Lord concerning the approaching desolation of Jerusalem: and they all gradually draw off our thoughts from the event primarily intended; lead them to a still more solemn and interesting scene, even the second coming of Christ to judge the world; and then conclude with a warning similar to that of my text. "Therefore be ye also ready; for "in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man "cometh."*" Take ye heed, watch and pray, for

ye know not when the time is." "Take heed to "yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be over
