And let an ardent zeal be joined

With perfect charity;
That grace to me impart,

With meekness to reprove,
To hate the sin with all my heart,

And still the sinner love. 3 Long as my trials last,

Long as the cross I bear,
O let my soul on thee be cast

In confidence and prayer!
Conduct me to the shore

Of everlasting peace,
Where storm and tempest rise no more,

Where sin and sorrow cease.

HEBER.

Pentecost.

i Spirit of truth! on this, thy day,

To thee for help we cry,
To guide us through the dreary way

Of dark mortality!
2 We ask not, Lord, thy cloven flame,

Or tongues of various tone; But long thy praises to proclaim

With fervor in our own. 3 We mourn not that prophetic skill

Is found on earth no more ; Enough for us to trace thy wili

In Scripture's sacred lore.
4 We neither have nor seek the power

Ill demons to control ;
But thou, in dark temptation's hour,

Shalt chase them from the soul.

5 No heavenly harpings soothe our ear,

No mystic dreams we share; Yet hope to feel thy comfort near,

And bless thee in our prayer. 6 When tongues shall cease, and power decay

And knowledge empty prove,
Do thou thy trembling servants stay,

With faith, and hope, and love!

WESLEYAN.
For the Divine Light.
1 Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit thou these hearts of thine;
If thou take thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay.

2 Heal our wounds, our strength renew;

On our dryness pour thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away;
Guide the steps that go astray.

3 Give us comfort when we die;

Give us life with thee on high ;
In thy sevenfold gifts descend;
Give us joys which never end.

Christ's Invitations.

1

The Spirit, in our hearts,

Is whispering, “Sinner, come"; The Bride, the Church of Christ, proclaims

To all his children, “Come!”

2

Let him that heareth say

To all about him, “ Come!”
Let him that thirsts for righteousness,

To Christ, the fountain, come!
Yes, whosoever will,

O let him freely come,
And freely drink the stream of life;

'T is Jesus bids him come.

Lo! Jesus, who invites,

Declares, “ I quickly come
Lord, even so! I wait thine hour;

Jesus, my Saviour, come!

361. MONTGOMERY.
Prayer for the Influences of the Holy Spirit.
1 O SPIRIT of the living God!

In all thy plenitude of grace,
Where'er the foot of man hath trod,

Descend on our benighted race.
2 Be darkness, at thy coming, light;

Confusion, order in thy path:
Souls without strength inspire with might,

Bid mercy triumph over wrath. 3 O Spirit of the Lord!

prepare All the round earth her God to meet; Breathe thou abroad like morning air,

Till hearts of stone begin to beat. 4 Baptize the nations ; far and nigh

The triumphs of the cross record;
The name of Jesus glorify,
Till every kindred call him Lord. .

L. M. 362. DRYDEN.

Divine Light and Guidance implored. 1 O SOURCE of uncreated light,

By whom the worlds were raised from night, Come, visit every pious mind;

Come, pour thy joys on human kind.
2 Plenteous in grace, descend from high,

Rich in thy matchless energy :
From sin and sorrow set us free,

And make us temples worthy thee.
3 Cleanse and refine our earthly parts,

Inflame and sanctify our hearts,
Our frailties help, our vice control,
Submit the senses to the soul.

4 Thrice holy Fount! thrice holy Fire !

Our hearts with heavenly love inspire ;
Make us eternal truths receive,
Aid us to live as we believe.

5 Chase from our path each noxious foe,

And peace, the fruit of love, bestow;
And, lest our feet should step astray,
Protect and guide us in our way.

363. MARRIOT.

Let there be Light.
i Thou, whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard,

And took their flight!
Hear us, we humbly pray,
And where the Gospel day
Sheds not its glorious ray,

Let there be light!

2 Thou, who didst come to bring,
On thy redeeming wing,

Healing and sight;
Health to the sick in mind;
Light to the inly blind;
O now to all mankind

Let there be light!

3 Descend thou from above,
Spirit of truth and love,

Speed on thy flight!
Move o'er the waters' face,
Spirit of hope and grace,
And in earth's darkest place

Let there be light!

BURDER'S Col.

Quickening Spirit.

1 COME, Holy Spirit, calm my mind,

And fit me to approach my God; Remove each vain, each worldly thought,

And lead me to thy blest abode. 2 Hast thou imparted to my soul

A living spark of holy fire?
O kindle now the sacred flame,
And make me burn with

pure

desire.

3 A brighter faith and hope impart,

And let me now my Saviour see;
O soothe and cheer my burdened heart,
And bid my spirit rest in thee.
