Woodcut 8vo, olive crossgrained morocco, gilt tooled back, sides with gilt double fillet border and triple fillet panel with corner fleurons and central ornament, wide borders inside with gilt tooled ornamentation, gilt edges, by CLARKE & BEDFORD; a few minute marginal repairs in the title-leaf, outer margins of leaves A7 and As restored, barely affecting the index letterpress; repaired wormhole in the lower margin of the first 46 leaves; last few leaves faintly stained and with a repaired wormhole. Imprinted at London for N. L. C. B. and T. H., 1600 THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS FAMOUS ELIZABETHAN ANTHOLOGY, CONTAINING AT LEAST NINETY-FIVE QUOTATIONS FROM SHAKESPEARE. The verse extracts in this volume, most of which are signed, are from over fifty poets and are arranged under subjects in alphabetical order. THE CHOICE HUTH COPY, with leaves measuring 518 by 31 inches. There are three known issues of this edition, of unestablished order of priority, distinguished by the title-page imprint and the dedicatory sonnet. In the present copy, which is of the variety listed first in S.T.C., the imprint is as given above and the dedicatory sonnet on the next leaf is addressed to Sir Thomas Mounson and signed "R.A." The

imprint initials stand for N. Ling, C. Burby, and T. Hayes. Another
issue gives "Th. Hayes” instead of the last two initials in the imprint
and has the same dedicatory sonnet variously signed "R.A." or "Robert
Allot". A third issue, of which only one copy (in the W. A. White
library) is known, has the imprint as in the present copy, but the
dedicatory sonnet is replaced by another "To Maister Iohn Gibson",
signed "Robert Allot". The present copy is without the first two and
the final blank leaves, which are not found in most copies.

From the library of John Boyle, Earl of Orrery, with armorial bookplate and with his autograph signature and a note that the volume was bought at Cork, October 10, 1736.
