Lewis Paul. With portrait.

A FINE LETTER, WRITTEN DURING THE ILLNESS WITH WHICH THE YEAR

On the day after I had been with you I was seized with a hoarseness which still continues. I had then a cough so violent that I once fainted under its convulsions. I was afraid of my Lungs. My Physician bled me yesterday and the day before, first almost against his will, but the next day without any contest. I had been bled once before, so that I lost in all 54 ounces. I live on treacles, and my cough, I thank God, is much abated, so that I can sleep . If you can spare

...

a bed, I will pass a week at your house. Change of air is often of use, and, I know you will let me live my own way. I have been pretty much dejected

.. All is well, and all is likely to continue well. The streets are all quiet, and the houses are all safe... The publick has escaped a very heavy calamity. The rioters attempted the Bank on Wednesday night, but in no great number, and like other thieves, with no great resolution Pray tell Miss Burney that Mr. Hutton called on me yesterday and spoke of her with praise: not profuse, but very sincere, just as I do. And tell Queeney that if she does not write oftener, İ will try to forget her. There are other pretty girls that perhaps I could get, if I were not constant My Lives go but slowly. I hope to add some to them this week. I wish they were well done (Published by G. Birkbeck Hill, "Letters of Samuel Johnson", Oxford, 1892, Vol. II, p. 154.)
