Á REMARKABLY CRISP COPY OF THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN A FINE OLD BINDING. On the title are the old names of former owners, J. Knaresbrough and Henry Gyles. This work is considered one of the greatest efforts of English Poetry during the Commonwealth Period. Alexander Pope's comment on it is exceedingly characteristic: "There are good many Flowers in it well worth gathering, and a man who has the Art of Stealing, will find his Account in reading it."

A HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, OF SUCH RARITY, that Gilchrist "So rare, that after some years' vain attempt I am forced to

says:

abandon the idea of myself owning the book. I have had to use a copy borrowed from one of Blake's surviving friends. There is (of course) none where at any rate there should be one-in the British Museum.'' Life of Blake, p. 23.

This precious volume was composed by Blake between the ages of 11 and 20 and privately printed by the help of friends, who, according to Gilchrist, presented the whole edition to Blake.

The present copy is remarkable for having two corrections in Blake's own hand at pp. 12 and 15, and possibly two others, according to a note in Mr. Forman's hand. On the fly-leaf opposite Mr. Forman's note, is an original Sonnet by him, signed with his initials, and dated June 10, 1883.

OF VERY GREAT RARITY. The plates were presented to Mr. Forman by R. A. Potts, and the presentation letter accompanies the plates.

A COMPLETE AND PERFECT COPY IS EXCESSIVELY RARE. The specimen exhibited at the Grolier Club in 1905 lacked the title; the Locker-Lampson copy lacked plate V.

The present collection consists of The Frontispiece; The Argument; I. Man cannot naturally Perceive; V. Man's desires are limited; VI. The desires & perceptions of man (2); Therefore God becomes as we are (2); I. Man's perceptions are not bounded; II. Reason, or the ratio of all we have.

In the Grolier catalogue above referred to, the compiler states: "There is no clue to its date," etc. ON THREE OF THE PRESENT PLATES THE WATERMARK SHOWS SUFFICIENT TO ESTABLISH THE DATE AS 1811.

FIRST EDITION, with the label on side dated March 1826. This is the longest and most important series executed by Blake, and the loftiest in theme; noblest in achievement, and the most original and characteristic of all his works.

THIS, AND THE TWO FOLLOWING ITEMS APPEAR TO BE PROOF IMPRESSIONS FROM THE ORIGINAL PLATES, though pulled at or about the above date as shown by the water-mark on some of the leaves. That they were not struck off as a trade reprint is evidenced by the varieties of paper used, both in size of the leaves and their texture. The present volume is printed entirely in pale black.

Like the preceding item the quality of the paper is uneven as is also the size, and the water-mark "1831" is shown on one of the Whatman leaves. With one exception the entire work is printed in a pale black—the exception being in pale sepia.

IN THIS COPY, THE GENERAL TITLE IS IN TWO STATES, one in black and the other in sepia, followed by a separate title, "Songs of Innocence. 23 of the plates are printed in sepia, 3 have been colored in the fashion of Blake, one having the caption in gold, with gold splashes here and there, and the balance in black.
