A SPLENDID COPY OF THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, with the GENUINE

BLANK LEAVES AT FRONT AND END.

THE PRESENT COPY WAS FORMERLY, AND VERY PROBABLY ORIGINALLY OWNED BY ABRAHAM COWLEY, the Dramatist, with his initials on the title-page. On the first blank leaf are numerous signatures and inscriptions of later contemporary owners. The fine portrait of Cowley, by Faithorne, is laid in.

THIS COPY CONTAINS THE TWO CANCELLED LEAVES, p. 7-8, and p. 215216.

This octavo edition was issued the same year as the quarto edition. Contains verses by Edmund Waller and Abraham Cowley, the latter "To Sir Will. D'Avenant upon his two first books of 'Gondibert' finished before his voyage to America.'' In the present copy, the last page is repeated, with verso blank.

THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF EACH OF THESE PIECES, which were the keenest Satires called forth by Davenant's "Gondibert." In Mr. Gosse's opinion, the former was the work of Denham, Cleveland, the younger Donne, and Jasper Mayne; and the latter, the work of Dr. Robert Wild, author of "Iter Boreale."

Mr. Forman has written a long note on the inserted fly-leaves regarding both of these works, and on a slip laid in, the writer states THE ONLY THREE COPIES KNOWN TO HIM were those of the Rev. Mr. Dyce in the So. Kensington Museum, the Huth copy, and his own.

This play is ascribed by some to Thomas Barker, but it is in all probability by Robert Davenport, as this play was enumerated with others by him, in a list at the Cockpit Theatre. With autograph of Cornelius Paine. Bookplate of W. J. Ibbett. The last line of the imprint has been sliced.

THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST EDITION, and a splendid copy, with ample margins. There were three editions printed in London, and one in Edinburgh, the same year. The second edition, 1604, has the imprint "E. Allde for T. Man." It is said that Shakespeare and eight other actors walked in the procession from the Tower to Westminster. With bookplate of John Duerdin.
