(a) Ce beau séjour était la retraite favorite du roi, sans doute parce que en harmonie avec sa personne, il unissait comme elle la grandeur à la tristesse. Souvent il y passait des mois entiers sans voir qui que ce fût, lisant et relisant sans cesse des papiers mystérieux, écrivant des choses inconnues, qu'il enfermait dans un coffre de fer dont lui seul avait le secret. Il se plaisait quelquefois à n'être servi que par un seul domestique, à s'oublier ainsi lui-même par l'absence de sa suite, et à vivre pendant plusieurs jours comme un homme pauvre ou comme un citoyen exilé. Jamais la vie et le monde lui avaient paru plus beaux que dans la solitude. Entre ses yeux et les pages qu'il s'efforçait de lire, passaient de brillants cortèges, des armées victorieuses, des peuples transportés d'amour; il se voyait puissant, combattant, triomphateur, adoré; et si un rayon du soleil, échappé des vitraux, venait à tomber sur lui, il se sentait emporté par une soif du jour ou du grand air qui l'arrachait de ces lieux sombres et étouffés.

The celebrated French painter David, in one of his pictures, has represented General Bonaparte crossing the snowy summits of the Alps mounted upon a fiery steed and arrayed in all the splendour of his martial uniform. The truth

is, that the general made the ascent of Mount Saint Bernard seated upon the back of a mule, dressed in the grey top-coat which he always wore, conversing from time to time with the officers he met on the road, and questioning the guide who accompanied him upon his manner of life, his pleasures, and his troubles, like an idle traveller who has nothing better to do. The guide, who was quite a young man, explained to the general, with the artless manner of a simple mountaineer, the difficulties of his humble existence, and especially the sorrow he felt at not being able to marry one of the young girls of the valley for want of means. On his return to Saint Pierre in the evening, the young man learnt to his great surprise what a distinguished traveller he had conducted during the day and that General Bonaparte had presented him with a house, a field, in fact with the means of marrying and of realising all the dreams of his modest ambition.
