This important production of Daniel contains many sweet and poetical passages, his strict adherence to the truth of history, the purity and elegance of his language, the correctness of his taste, and his occasional touches of the pathetic, all place him among the better writers of his day, and an ornament of his age; and if not among our first great epic composers, certainly one of the chiefest and best of our second-class poets.

The above edition consists of eight books, so that besides containing all which has appeared in the previous issues it contains the actual first edition of the seventh and eighth books, and we may add it is the last published separate edition of the poem. Each Tree, whose thick and spreading growth hath made,

Rather a night beneath the Boughs,

than shade,

(Unwilling now to grow)

Lookes like the Plume a Captive weares,
Whose rifled Falls are steept i'th teares
Which from his last rage flow.

The piteous River wept itself away
Long since (Alas!) to such a swift decay;
That reach the Map; and looke

If you a River there there can spie;
And for a River your mock'd Eie,
Will finde a shallow Brooke."

There are also poems in honour of Ben Jonson and Fletcher, etc.
This is an exceedingly rare edition,
