4 Thou only canst the cheering words
Of endless life supply,

Anointed of the Lord of lords,
The Son of God most high.

182.

S. M.

WATTS.

Mercy of God to Soul and Body.

1 O, BLESS the Lord, my soul;
Let all within me join,

And aid my tongue to bless his name,
Whose favors are divine.

2 O, bless the Lord, my soul;
Nor let his mercies lie
Forgotten in unthankfulness,
And without praises die.

3 "Tis he forgives thy sins;
"Tis he relieves thy pain;
"Tis he that heals thy sicknesses,
And gives thee strength again.

4 He crowns thy life with love,

When ransomed from the grave; He, who redeemed my soul from hell, Hath sovereign power to save.

5 He fills the poor with good;

He gives the sufferers rest: The Lord hath judgments for the proua. And justice for th' oppressed.

6 His wondrous works and ways
He made by Moses known,

But sent the world his truth and grace
By his beloved Son.

Greatness of God's Mercy.

WATTS

1 MY soul, repeat his praise
Whose mercies are so great,
Whose anger is so slow to rise,
So ready to abate.

184.

2 His power subdues our sins,
And his forgiving love,

Far as the east is from the west,
Doth all our guilt remove.

3 High as the heavens are raised
Above the ground we tread,
So far the riches of his grace
Our highest thoughts exceed.

S. M.

Kindness to our Frailty.

1 THE pity of the Lord,

To those that fear his name,
Is such as tender parents feel;
He knows our feeble frame.
2 He knows we are but dust,

Scattered with every breath;
His anger, like a rising wind,
Can send us swift to death.

3 Our days are as the grass,

WATTS.

Or like the morning flower;
When blasting winds sweep o'er the field,
It withers in an hour.

4 But thy compassions, Lord,

To endless years endure;

And children's children ever find
Thy words of promise sure.

DODDRIDGE.

God's Goodness to the Children of Men.

1 YE sons of men, with joy record
The various wonders of the Lord;
And let his power and goodness sound
Through all your tribes, the earth around.

[ocr errors]

2 Let the high heavens your songs invite, —
Those spacious fields of brilliant light,
Where sun, and moon, and planets roll,
And stars that glow from pole to pole.

3 But, O, that brighter world above,
Where lives and reigns incarnate Love!
God's only Son, in flesh arrayed,
For man a bleeding victim made.

4 Thither, my soul, with rapture soar;
There, in the land of praise, adore;
The theme demands an angel's lay,
Demands an everlasting day.

WATTS.

The Goodness and Mercy of God celebrated.

1 BLESS, O my soul, the living God;
Call home thy thoughts, that rove abroad;
Let all the powers within me join
In work and worship so divine.

2 Bless, O my soul, the God of grace;
His favors claim thy highest praise;
Let not the wonders he hath wrought
Be lost in silence, and forgot.

3 'Tis he, my soul, that sent his Son

To die for crimes which thou hast done:
He owns the ransom, and forgives

The hourly follies of our lives.

4 Let every land his

power confess
Let all the earth adore his grace:
My heart and tongue, with rapture, join
In work and worship so divine.

WATTS.

God's Goodness.

1 SWEET is the memory of thy grace,
My God, my heavenly King;
Let age to age thy righteousness
In songs of glory sing.

2 God reigns on high, but ne'er confines
His goodness to the skies;

Through all the earth his bounty shines,
And every want supplies.

3 How kind are thy compassions, Lord!
How slow thine anger moves!

But soon he sends his pardoning word,
To cheer the souls he loves.

4 Sweet is the memory of thy grace,
My God, my heavenly King;
Let age to age thy righteousness
In songs of glory sing.

[blocks in formation]

1. MY God, my portion, and my love,
My everlasting all,

I've none but thee in heaven above,
Or on this earthly ball.

2 How vain a toy is glittering wealth,
If once compared to thee!
Or what's my safety, or my health,
Or all my friends, to me?

3 Were I possessor of the earth,
And called the stars my own,
Without thy graces, and thyself,
1 were a wretch undone."

WATTS.

4 Let others stretch their arms like seas,
And grasp in all the shore;
Grant me the visits of thy grace,
And I desire no more.

[blocks in formation]

1 GOD is the fountain whence

Ten thousand blessings flow;

[ocr errors]

To him my life, my health, and friends,
And every good, I owe.

2 The comforts he affords

Are neither few nor small;

He is the source of fresh delights,
My portion and my all.

190.

3 He fills my heart with joy,
My lips attunes for praise;
And to his glory I'll devote
The remnant of my days.

God our Wisdom.

1 SINCE all the varying scenes of time
God's watchful eye surveys,

O, who so wise to choose our lot,
Or to appoint our ways!

HERVEY.

2 Good when he gives, - supremely good, -
Nor less when he denies;

E'en crosses, from his sovereign hand,
Are blessings in disguise.

3 Why should we doubt a Father's love,
So constant and so kind?
To his unerring, gracious will
Be every wish resigned.

4 In thy fair book of life divine,
My God, inscribe my name;
There let it fill some humble place,
Beneath my Lord, the Lamb.

[blocks in formation]

1 BEHOLD, what wondrous grace
The Father has bestowed
On sinners of a mortal race,
To call them sons of God!

2 Nor doth it yet appear

WATTS.

How great we must be made;
But when we see our Saviour here,
We shall be like our Head.

3 A hope so much divine

May trials well endure;
May purify our souls from sin,
As Christ, the Lord, is pure.
