LI PREFATORY NOTE THE Editor hopes to include in the series of Books for Bible Students three or four volumes (of which this is the first) designed to give a sketch of the history and development of the Christian Church from the age of the apostles to the present day. These Manuals are not intended to set forth any denominational view of ecclesiastical history or organisation, and will be written by members of different branches of the Church. Contributors to this series write with entire independence, and each is responsible only for the opinions he himself expresses. The Editor, whilst offering occasional suggestions, has never sought to hamper the scholars whose co-operation he has been so fortunate as to secure. On many points, especially of exposition, those who strive together for the faith of the gospel must be free to express diverse views.
