of teaching and of learning is the selfhelp way, and texts that are really modern texts aid both pupils and teachers in the accomplishment of the goal. As SELF-HELP ENGLISH LESSONS, by Julia H. Wohlfarth and John J. Mahoney, indicate by their title, their aim is to teach the right kind of learning. The self-help method is emphasized and utilized from beginning to end. Pupils are given a definite purpose, they are taught how to study, trained to estimate their own work, and consciously to apply self-help methods.

There are no other texts that can claim the unique and effective methods that are the chief distinction of Self-Help English Lessons.

Syllabi of School Subjects

PREPARED BY

The Department of Education of the

State of New York

On account of lack of appropriations the New York State Department of Education is unable to distribute widely the Syllabi of high school subjects which it has prepared for the guidance of teachers and pupils in secondary schools. Believing that these syllabi should be in the hands of all academic teachers and of all students who are preparing to take Regents' examinations, the New York Education Company has reprinted them and is offering them to teachers and students at the rates given below.

These Syllabi are printed in pamphlet form, in clear type, on high grade paper, and the subject matter is up-to-date and exactly as prepared by the Department of Education.

[blocks in formation]

These Syllabi will be sent to any address in the United States postpaid on receipt of price. For orders of twenty or more copies to one address a discount of ten per cent will be allowed.

Our awards are issued in connection with our monthly award tests for typing, the rules being the same for all contestants.

These tests are prepared by Professor Herbert H. Palmer, of the English Department, College of Business Administration, Syracuse University.

On each test is given the number of strokes per word in the entire test, the stroke standardization varying but slightly from month to month. This standardizing enables the instructor to determine the progress which his students make from month to month.

It has been found that the value of our school service lies in our effort to raise the standard of typewriting, by the careful grading of each test paper which we receive. We keep a close contact with instructors, and our service means more than the issuing of awards and monthly typing tests.

Full information about our school plan is explained in our booklet Form 589. We shall be pleased to send you this free upon request.
