Habitual Devotion.

1 WHILE thee I seek, protecting Power!
Be my vain wishes stilled;
And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be filled.

2 Thy love the powers of thought bestowed,
To thee my thoughts would soar;
Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed,-
That mercy I adore!

3 In each event of life, how clear
Thy ruling hand I see!

4

Each blessing to my soul more dear,
Because conferred by thee.

In every joy that crowns my days,
In every pain I bear,

My heart shall find delight in praise,
Or seek relief in prayer.

5 When gladness wings my favored hour,
Thy love my thoughts shall fill;
Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower,
My soul shall meet thy will.

6 My lifted eye, without a tear,

The gathering storm shall see;

My steadfast heart shall know no fear;—
That heart shall rest on thee!

METHODIST COLL

"I will that men pray everywhere."

1 THEY Who seek the throne of grace Find that throne in every place;

If we live a life of prayer,
God is present everywhere.

2 In our sickness, in our health,
In our want or in our wealth,
If we look to God in prayer,
God is present everywhere.

3 When our earthly comforts fail,
When the woes of life prevail,
'Tis the time for earnest prayer:
God is present everywhere.

4 Then, my soul, in every strait,
To thy Father come, and wait;
He will answer every prayer,
God is present everywhere.

[blocks in formation]

1 COME, kingdom of our God,
Sweet reign of light and love!
Shed peace, and hope, and joy abroad,
And wisdom from above.

2 Over our spirits first

3

Extend thy healing reign;

There raise and quench the sacred thirst, That never pains again.

Come, kingdom of our God!

And make the broad earth thine; Stretch o'er her lands and isles the rod That flowers with grace divine.

4

5

Soon may all tribes be blest With fruit from life's glad tree; And in its shade like brothers rest, Sons of one family.

Come, kingdom of our God! And raise thy glorious throne In worlds by the undying trod, Where God shall bless his own.

"Pray without ceasing."

ED. LIT. REV.

1 Go when the morning shineth,
Go when the noon is bright,
Go when the eve declineth,
Go in the hush of night;
Go with pure mind and feeling,
Fling earthly thought away,
And, in thy closet kneeling,
Do thou in secret pray.

• Remember all who love thee,
All who are loved by thee;
Pray, too, for those who hate thee,
If any such there be;

Then for thyself, in meekness,

A blessing humbly claim,
And blend with each petition
Thy great Redeemer's name.

3 Or, if 't is e'er denied thee
In solitude to pray,

Should holy thoughts come o'er thee
When friends are round thy way,

E'en then the silent breathing,
Thy spirit raised above,
Will reach his throne of glory,
Where dwells eternal love.

4 O, not a joy or blessing

[ocr errors]

With this can we compare,
The grace our Father gave us
To pour our souls in prayer:
Whene'er thou pin'st in sadness,
Before his footstool fall;
Remember, in thy gladness,
His love, who gave thee all.

The Heart given to God.

WESLEYAN.

1 TAKE my heart, O Father, take it, Make and keep it all thine own; Let thy Spirit melt it, break it,This proud heart of sin and stone. 2 Heavenly Father! deign to mould it In obedience to thy will;

And, as ripening years unfold it,
Keep it meek and childlike still.

3 Father! make it pure and lowly,
Fond of peace and far from strife,
Turning from the paths unholy
Of this vain and sinful life.

4 Ever let thy grace surround it, Strengthen it with power divine,

Till thy cords of love have bound it,– Made it to be wholly thine.

5 May the blood of Jesus heal it,
And its sins be all forgiven;
Holy Spirit, take and seal it,—
Guide it in the path to heaven.

MONTGOMERY.

Following after God.

1 O GOD, thou art my God alone; Early to thee my soul shall cry, A pilgrim in a land unknown,

A thirsty land, whose springs are dry.

2 Yet, through this rough and thorny maze,
I follow hard on thee, my God;
Thine hand unseen upholds my ways;
I lean upon thy staff and rod.

3 Thee, in the watches of the night,
When I remember, on my bed,

Thy presence makes the darkness light, Thy guardian wings are round my head.

4 Better than life itself thy love,
Dearer than all beside to me;

For whom have I in heaven above,
Or what on earth, compared with thee?

5 Praise with my heart, my mind, my voice, For all thy mercy, I will give ;

My soul shall still in God rejoice;
My tongue shall bless thee while I live.
