146. CRUIKSHANK (GEORGE). Pencil Study. View from the Top of St. Paul's. With marginal notes and inscription on the top in Cruikshank's autograph. Size 11 x 171⁄2 inches.

The central theme is a view of Fleet Street as seen from St. Paul's Cathedral. On the margins are various notes and memoranda evidently intended for other sketches in connection with the great Exposition at Hyde Park, 1851-details of bridges, balloons, triumphal arches, etc.

The devil rising from the sea hands Napoleon a loaded pistol and says, "If you have one spark of courage left take this."

The treaty of Paris, whereby Napoleon abdicated, and was sent by the allies to Elba, was signed on May 30, 1814.

The etched title is signed in pencil by Cruikshank and the woodcut for the cover bears the following legend in his autograph: "Proofs from the original engravings on wood for the Table Book-Geo. Cruikshank." VERY RARE.
