FIRST EDITION. A most interesting work by this eminent philologist showing that the Negroes have had a far greater influence (probably preColumbian) upon American civilization than has heretofore been suspected. A second volume (to be published later) will deal with African fetichism, and will show to what extent the Indian medicine-man owes his evolution to the African medicine-man.

The illustrations are from such rare sources as Santarem, Thevet, Kingsborough, Harrisse, etc.

A very rare edition of the earliest work on criticism in English. To this book it has been well maintained that Shakespeare himself owes something, including hints for Dogberry's character. Gabriel Harvey, the poet and writer, and intimate friend of Edmund Spenser, thought most highly of it and in his own annotated copy remarks "Next after Tulle himself mie familiar rhetoricians, Quintillian and Wilson, daly necessarie and important in Latin and English in euerie parlies and discourse private or publique,'' and again, 'Doctor Wilson's Inglish Demosthenes: and his dialogue of Usurie: much commended of fine Censors, gallant examples of his rhetorique precepts." Fine large copy.
