444. GAINE (HUGH, Printer in New York City). Manuscript Receipt Book covering the years from 1767 to 1799. 358 pages, containing almost a thousand receipts. Oblong 12mo, sheep, rebacked. Enclosed in a full morocco solander case. New York, 1767-1799.

Of great importance and certainly a most valuable contribution to the history of New York. Almost every prominent New Yorker of the time is represented and many of the receipts are of important character. There are several receipts by Mary Parker for New York Laws. Joseph Allicocke on account of two shares of the United Whaling Company of N. Y.; Bernard Ratzer for Maps; Anne Kierarstedt for rent of Playhouse between 1778 and 1790; William Schaffer's receipt dated 1773 for the paper for making money for the government; Peter Maverick's receipt for cuts of the Universal spelling book. There are also found the names of J. C. C. Colden; Phillip Livingston, Thomas Lynch, Richard & Nichlas Van Dam, John Anderson, John Tiebout, Robert Hodge, and many others.

Carew was born in Devonshire, was tried at Exeter about 1739 and banished to Maryland, where he went at the cost of the public. "He

gives an amusing account of the country, and his adventures in Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, till he embarked at New London for England. His accounts how he bamboozled and bled Whitefield, Thomas Penn, Gov. Thomas, are amusing, true or not." -Stevens.

The large portrait is rarely found.
