WASHINGTON'S GENERAL ORDER BOOK

275. WASHINGTON (GEORGE). Manuscript General Order Book of General Washington, from May 28, 1780, to August 2, 1780, issued from Head Quarters at Morristown, Ramapo, etc. Written

on 90 leaves, oblong 4to, original half calf binding. Preserved in a full dark green straight-grain morocco solander case.

This General Order Book covers a bare quarter of this disastrous year to the patriot cause. Washington and his army are camped at Morristown at this time. Lafayette and Baron Steuben are both with the army, when Gen. Knyphausen crosses from Staten Island into New Jersey, and on June 7th occupies Elizabethtown, but withdraws on the advance of troops from Morristown. Washington commends the troops for their efforts on the action of this date. Clinton, on a feint, sends Washington to the Highlands, and the entries show the camp at Ramapo (Ramapaugh). The entries also include the results of Court Martials, etc.

The perils which threatened Washington's army at this time were evidently not unknown to the Commander in Chief, as the Orders indicate his constant watchfulness and preparedness for any and all emergencies.
