FINE AND SCARCE.

THE ONLY COPY KNOWN OF VIEW OF BOSTON.

294. BOSTON. A View of Castle William by Boston in New England. This Castle was built by Collonell Romer A. D. 1724 by Order of the General Assembley. Line. Rectangle, size 118x 12 9/16 inches. Backed with linen and bound in royal 8vo, full

roan.

IN IMPORTANCE, INTEREST AND RARITY THIS IS SECOND ONLY TO THE BRADFORD MAP. Mr. Andrews rightly believed it to be unique, AS THERE IS NO OTHER COPY KNOWN. Stauffer ascribes the print to PAUL REVERE (No. 2680) but it is evidently before his time, and probably contemporary. The work strongly resembles the few known prints published by Wm. Burgis about 1730 and is probably by Thomas Johnston.

THE FAMOUS BRADFORD MAP

338. THE BRADFORD MAP. A PLAN OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK FROM AN ACTUAL SURVEY. MADE BY JAMES LYNE. Line. Rectangle. Size 18x22 5/6 inches.

A FINE AND PERFECT EXAMPLE. Another copy, in bad condition, varnished and cracked, is in the New York Historical Society, and one is in the office of the Commissioner of Public Works. IT IS THE EARLIEST, RAREST, AND MOST INTERESTING MAP OF THE CITY KNOWN, and in almost perfect preservation, with UNCUT MARGINS. Engraved, probably in 1731, lightly and delicately on thin laid paper, on which an ornament including a fleur-de-lis and the letters: "F. A. G." can be distinguished. It is familiar to collectors from the many reproductions that have been made. MR. ANDREWS JUSTLY CONSIDERED IT THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM IN HIS COLLECTION, and a copy of each of his books "The Bradford Map" and "James Lyne's Survey" is included. This map is very fully described in Mr. Stokes' "Iconography of N. Y. City,” Võl. I, p. 254.
