29. BLOCK WOODCUT. An Early Block Woodcut, repre senting the subject of the "Quindecim Signa," pasted in the front cover of an imperfect MS. Service Book of the XVth century, beginning "De Sancto Francisco Confessore Vigilia." (35 leaves, 634 x 434 inches), written in Gothic letter, double columns, 25 lines, red rubrics and painted capitals. Small 4to, original monastic binding of oak boards and sheepskin, with leather strap clasp. Sæc. XV

EXCESSIVELY RARE. The woodcut, which is in outline, measures 64 by 44 inches and represents the prophecy "that the sea shall rise forty ells above all mountains and appear to stand up like a wall. The cut appears to be the upper subject of the second leaf (in a block book), THE FIRST ENGRAVED SUBJECT OF THE "QUINDECIM SIGNA" (circa 1430). (S. Leigh Sotheby, "Principia Typographia," vol. II, p. 43.) At the head of the woodcut are three lines of block text in German. The first figure and a corner of the text are damaged.
