EXCESSIVELY RARE. There were two editions, both without date or place, probably printed in quick succession. The Letter is directed by Laneham "Vntoo my good freend, Master Humfrey Martin Mercer." But two copies besides the present have been sold since 1885. A fine copy in a splendid old binding, with a few marginal notes in a contemporary hand on several pages.

Colophon: Imprinted at London by Robert Crowley, 1550 A SPLENDID COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Next to Chaucer, Langland is the most conspicuous figure in our early English Poetry, and his "Vision" displays that side of English society which Chaucer had not touched. The work was composed circa 1362, but the first printed edition did not appear until 1550, when it came from the press of Robert Crowley, who in the same year printed a second edition, but without the woodcut title-page. Not more than five editions were printed before the year 1600, all of which are of great rarity, and apart from their value as literary treasures they are very important, because they contain passages relating to the private lives and practices of the clergy which are suppressed from most of the modern editions. The Lefferts-Winans copy, with bookplate of each.

EXCESSIVELY RARE, and A SUPERB COPY, having the folding plates. This is a translation of six of the famous nine tracts of Las Casas. Sir Arthur Helps closes a fine eulogium on Las Casas by saying: "Take away all he said, and did, and preached, and wrote, and preserved (for the early historians of the New World owe the records of many of their most valuable facts to him); and the history of the conquest would lose a considerable portion of its most precious material. He has justly been called, 'The Great Apostle of the Indies.''

FIRST EDITIONS. VERY FINE COPIES, with the two titles printed within different woodcut borders. On the verso of the first title is an elaborate woodcut device. The Colophons vary slightly in their wording and spelling. Some of the running headlines of the Sixth Sermon are misprinted "thyrde."



1020. LATIN NEW TESTAMENT. Spanish Codex of the end of the Tenth Century. Written on rough parchment in a very peculiar hand. Sixteen pages of Eusebian Tables are richly decorated with ornamentations in colors, showing very strong Irish and Moorish character. 195 leaves, without pagination or catchwords, 24 lines to the page, and numerous colored initials in red, blue, and green. Folio, old vellum over oaken boards. Spain, Tenth Century.

A MANUSCRIPT OF WONDERFUL BEAUTY AND RARITY, the text of which follows closely that of the Codex Carensis which was written in the ninth century. The present treasure was executed in Northern Spain, either on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees or Arragonia.

Of remarkable interest are the sixteen pages of Eusebian Tables, presenting unmistakable Irish and Moorish influence. The columns are distinctly Irish and the arches Moorish; a combination which later disappeared. The first and fifteenth tables contain paintings of the emblems of Evangelists; five of the pages containing very peculiar grotesques.

This Manuscript is a GREAT MONUMENT FROM EVERY POINT OF VIEW; text, calligraphy, and ornaments. So few Spanish Manuscripts of such antiquity survived the inquisition and permanently disturbed condition of the country, that on the strength of the calligraphy alone there is not sufficient evidence to indicate exactly where this was written the existing Spanish manuscripts being insufficient for the comparison.

From the artistic point of view, it is certainly a valuable specimen for the history of art, and shows how gradually Irish and Moorish art was superseded by Spanish ideas and harmony of colors; but apart from the above reason, this Codex is of the GREATEST IMPORTANCE for another: In the middle part of the Manuscript (the Passion of our Saviour) there are musical notations for singing, indicated by 3 signs, an "h", an "1" and inverted commas, for three voices.

IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE EARLIEST MANUSCRIPT KNOWN, WITH SUCH MUSICAL NOTATIONS FOR SINGING, and only lately historians of musical liturgy have drawn attention to this beginning of musical notation and have started to write on this subject.

The present Manuscript was in England at the beginning of the sixteenth century, as is shown by the note in English at the beginning of the volume. The last leaf was written at a considerably later period than the rest of the manuscript.

1021. LAWES (HENRY AND WILLIAM). Choice Psalmes put into Musick, For Three Voices. The most of which may properly enough be sung by any three, with a Thorough Base. With divers Elegies, set in Musick by sev'rall Friends, upon the death of William Lawes. And at the end of the Thorough Base are added nine Canons of Three and Foure Voices, made by William Lawes. Illustrated with a brilliant portrait of Charles I, as frontispiece; repeated for Vol. 3, also as a frontispiece; and on verso of title of Vol. 2, imprinted above the musician notation. A VERY RARE COMPLETE SET, IN SUPERB CONDITION. The impressions of the beautiful and brilliant portraits of Charles I, vary from the Huntington copy (the Gosling-Lefferts-Chew), which appeared on the verso of three titles, instead of as frontispieces as in the present copy.

"Great efforts have been made to place this Column in marching condition although the roads are Continuous tracks of mud in which the wagons plunge up to their axles. I hope the forces can be united, with a few days supply of provisions, so as to move forward on Thursday 12th inst." The A. H. Joline copy, with an autograph note, signed, by him stating that he received the autograph letter from Robert M. Hughes of Norfolk, Va., a grand-son of Gen. Floyd.
