UNIQUE COPY, with the following A. L. s. from the editor of the publication:

Dear Mr. de Lancey,

"10 March, 1894.

As you were so kind as to read the proofs of my 'Introduction' and to make valuable suggestions I beg to send you a unique copy of the Grolier publication of Bradford. The added sheets are the only ones printed in sepia. Then it was concluded that black was preferable. These sheets I send you as a s'ight acknowledgment of your kindness and interest. They conclude the volume. Faithfully yours,

Rob. Ludlow Fowler.

Το

Edward F. de Lancey."

The added sheets referred to by Mr. Fowler are three distinct proofs

of the first page of his "Introduction,'' stricken off on Japan Paper. One proof has, in sepia, an impression of the vignette plate, designed and engraved by Max Rosenthal, which plate was retained upon publication. The two other proofs have each a design, entirely different from the accepted one and from one another. One is of a forensic, and the other of a typographical nature. These two latter designs were evident'y rejected, and are unique. Inserted, besides the three plates and the letter, the Prospectus of the work. The book is limited to 312 copies, on handmade paper.

Two views and a map have been inserted.

THE MANUSCRIPT OF JOHN HAY'S ONLY NOVEL 355. HAY (JOHN). The Breadwinners. A Sociological Study. THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF THIS CELEBRATED AMERICAN NOVEL, comprising Chapters 1 to 16, complete (lacking the last three chapters, 17-20), written on 252 pages (one side only), small folio.

TOGETHER WITH THE ORIGINAL OPEN LETTER to the Editor of the Century Magazine (in which the work first appeared), signed "By the Author of the Breadwinners," (written in another hand) in which the author sets forth his purpose in writing the book and replying to his critics. This letter consists of nearly 14 pages, quarto, and in it the writer says"My motive in withholding my name is simple enough. I am engaged in business in which my standing wou'd be seriously compromised if it were known that I had written a novel. I am sure my efficiency in my trade is not lessened by this act, but I am equally sure that I could never recover from the injury it would occasion me if known among my colleagues. For that positive reason, and for the negative one that I do not care for publicity, I resolved to keep the knowledge of my little venture in authorship restricted to as small a circle as possible. Only two persons beside myself know who wrote The Breadwinners—one is the Editor of the Century Magazine, the other an eminent man of letters, who had the kindness to read my manuscript and whose approval encouraged me to print it."

The whole material neatly arranged in one volume, each leaf carefully guarded on a hinge, and bound in full red levant morocco, the sides and back richly gilt tooled.
