823. PRYNNE (WILLIAM.) The History of King John, King Henry III., and the Most Illustrious King Edward I. Wherein

the Ancient Sovereign Dominions of the Kings of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, Over all Persons in all causes, is asserted and Vindicated, etc., etc. Collected out of the Ancient Records in the Tower of London. Thick folio, calf, gilt, red edges. London, 1670

823A. QUAKERS. Fox (George), Stubbs (John), and Furley (Benjamin). A Battle-Door for Teachers and Professors to learn Singular and Plural.-&c., 1660.-The Great Mistery of the Great Whore Unfolded and Antichrist's Kingdom Revealed unto Destruction. 1659. Two works in one volume, folio, full mottled calf, gilt edges, by Riviere. Blank margin of title repaired.

London, 1659-60

FIRST EDITION of a very remarkable work. There are probably few books in the English language more singular in their character and more carnest in their aim than Fox's "Battle-Door."' It may be regarded as not merely a Quaker Primer, but as the earliest Protest, and a strangely worded one, against the improper use of the plural number in addressing individuals. It is the joint work of three members of the Society of Friends, and is not only a very erudite but also a most enter taining publication.

824. QUARLES (FRANCIS). Emblems, Divine and Moral. With Hieroglyphicks of the Life of Man. Many engravings on copper. 12mo, full dark blue crushed levant morocco, gilt edges, by The French Binders. London, 1736

Tall, sound and fine copy. Has preliminary verses by Richard Love and Edward Benlowes, author of "Theophila or Love's Sacrifice," published in 1652, and to whom Quarles dedicated the work.
