Nos. I. to IX deal with events which had an important bearing on his own life, or which show him as he described himself. They include one letter as an example of his epistolary style, of his behaviour in exile, and of his affection for his home. The later passages, Nos. X to XVII, are anecdotes. illustrative of the range and variety of his narrative. Baiter and Halm's edition of Orelli has been followed for the text.
