PREFACE.

THE greater part of the notes to the following Selections are taken from several excellent editions that are well known in Germany. Those on the Impeachment of Verres are from Orelli and Zumpt; those on the Catilinarian Orations from Matthiæ, Orelli, Klotz, and Bloch; those on the Speech in defence of Archias from Matthiæ, Stürenburg, and Klotz.

The Second Part (from the Epistles) is nearly ready; and similar editions of Sallust and Virgil are in the press. I have also commenced a Greek series, of which a volume of Selections from Xenophon, and an edition of the four first books of Homer, are in a forward state of preparation.

It will be my object throughout to give enough help, but not too much. I need hardly say that the best German editions will supply me with abundant
