Libro Prima edizione
Cloth. Condizione: Good. First Edition. New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845. First Edition. xxxiii, [4], 398, [8] pp. 7 3/4" x 4 3/4", cloth, spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Bookplate from The Philadelphia Sketch Club, signed by Louis Hasselburch, and their stamp. Spine area worn with signs of small scale old adhesive repair, joints soiled with tears at spots, dust and edge wear, corners and spine ends rubbed; front hinge cracked, front endpapers covered and pasted with newspaper clippings (one in German); generally in Good or slightly better condition. A popular 19th century artist?s manual, taken largely from the French art manuals of Bouvier, Merimee and de Montabert. Period techniques and materials on the title subject, offered [uncredited; he usually remained anonymous, as here] by a now largely forgotten artist and writer of the day, Laughton Osborn. Osborn was well-thought of by Edgar Allen Poe, to whose periodical publications he often contributed. A thoroughly accessed and used book - by who knows what artists ? - but a very rare first edition. L49.
