Second Nature: A Gardener's Education

In his first book (written years before The Omnivore's Dilemma or In Defense of Food) Pollan traces his growth as a gardener, from his suburban Long Island childhood to adulthood as the owner of an abandoned farm in Connecticut. You can see the roots of his later works here -- successful truck farms and abandoned dairies, the arguments for and against letting nature take it's course, a maturing awareness of man's place in the world. Recommended to all gardeners.
