"Since the death of my brother, the late Dr. John Clarke, I think I am at liberty to say, that many of the variations and additions in this collection of psalms and hymns, were either made or suggested by him ..."--Note on p. 266; signed: J.B. May 31, 1798
"The hymns from the 300th to the end, are added to this edition, and have been selected by the successor of the Rev. Author. It is hoped that they will increase the value of the collection, and will serve to cherish that spirit of genuine devotion, which the whole work is eminently adapted to promote."--Page [vi]. Although John S. Popkin succeeded Belknap as pastor of the Federal Street Church in Boston, he was there only from 1799 to 1802. It seems more probable therefore that this note refers to William Ellery Channing, pastor of the Federal Street Church from 1803 to 1842
"The characters denoting the sharp or flat key are prefixed to each psalm or hymn at my request, by the Rev. Dr. Morse, of Charlestown."--Preface, p. v
